Social and Emotional Learning and Fostering the Formative Five: Empathy

What is Empathy?

In addition to taking on the perspective of others, empathy includes the skills of how to value, respect, and understand a person’s perspective even when not agreeing with it. Empathy is built by taking time to listen to understand a person’s thoughts, feelings, values, and perspectives. It requires face-to-face interactions, which is becoming more needed with increased technology in our society. Having empathy and compassion for others builds trust and positive relationships that students and adults need in order to foster a sense of community and belonging. Empathy education is key to preventing bullying and harassment towards individuals and/or groups.
